The Matter of Savitri

In the 20th century undivided Bengal, Savitri, the protagonist of this novel, was raped by many people at different places. This novel is based on the news and documents of such a sensational rape case of West Bengal in India in 1938. Some of the facts are used at the end of the book. The entire narrative deals in fact with an account of Savitri’s unassailable annihilation. The social character of the time and the picture of Hindu-Muslim relations have also been depicted in this novel. This is not only a narrative of a woman’s endless oppression and suffering, but also a picture of the society.
